# The Mothers Who Signed the Lease: Angelina Musik, MOMtrepreneurs, and a Reel of San Antonio Interviews

*A note on how this was written: I wrote this essay from the video's YouTube description and from Angelina Musik's own published backstory. The video has no transcript, and I did not watch it, so I don't quote anything said in the interviews.*

There is a particular kind of woman who builds a business with a child on her hip. She doesn't wait for permission, and she rarely waits for credit. In 2011, a reel went up on YouTube collecting the moments when television, radio, and the press turned their cameras toward one such woman: Angelina Musik, founder of MOMtrepreneurs™.

The list of outlets in the description is worth reading slowly. CBS's Great Day SA. NBC's San Antonio Living Show. NBC's iVillage. TBN's Praise the Lord. KSLR's MOMtrepreneurs and Believe and Achieve radio shows. Express News MySA. The Red Dress Society Angel Awards. That isn't one lucky segment. It's years of showing up.

## Where it began

Angelina was born in München, Germany, and came to the United States at thirteen, arriving at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. By sixteen she was running small ventures of her own.

At twenty-three, she opened Angelina's House, a state-registered home childcare. It let her raise her own two children while building financial independence and helping other working mothers. In 1990, she founded MOMtrepreneurs to coach mothers on how to decide on, launch, and grow a business around raising a family.

That order matters. MOMtrepreneurs didn't come from a theory about mothers. It came from a mother who had already done it.

## A newsroom of her own

In San Antonio, Angelina brought what she knew to the airwaves. She hosted the MOMtrepreneurs radio show on AM 630 KSLR and a MOMtrepreneurs TV show on KHCE-TV 23, managed by TBN.

She also built an alternative to the usual business mixer. She produced monthly events that brought together business, media, marketing, and web technology at venues like the Quarry Golf Course and the Plaza Club. There were semi-annual expos at hotels, and a small business expo at the AT&T Center during a Spurs game, for 17,000 ticketholders.

What set her approach apart was the camera. She filmed the vendors at these events and promoted them on radio, on television, in local magazines such as San Antonio Women Magazine (later INSIDE Magazine), and on websites built for them. As she tells it, the coverage widened their reach and brought in leads, and it restored their hope in what actually worked to market a business.

In 2004, that work earned her two U.S. Small Business Administration awards, through the Small Business Development Center at UTSA and the San Antonio SBA office.

## What the reel holds, and what it doesn't

A reel like this one shows a woman being interviewed. It doesn't show the work that made people want to interview her: the childcare years, the coaching, the expos set up and torn down, the vendors she put in front of a camera when no one else would.

Her own account is candid that the years after 2004 were not all forward motion. A serious injury in a traffic accident took her away from several opportunities, and she stepped back from public life for a long stretch to heal and to care for her family. The Believe and Achieve Radio Show, one of the programs named in the reel, was short-lived. She says so plainly, and so should we.

## Why it matters to Business Women News readers

Many capable women undervalue their own record. They file the radio show under "a little thing I did," the award under "the committee was kind," and the years of building under "just getting by." Angelina's reel quietly argues with that habit. When press from that many outlets has covered your work, it is evidence, and you are allowed to treat it that way.

For the mother running a business from her kitchen table tonight, the lesson is the one MOMtrepreneurs was built on: your family is not the obstacle to your enterprise. It may be the reason it works.
